REDMOND, Wash. — A new text message scam is making its way across the Washington and multiple other states, falsely claiming recipients have unpaid tolls that require immediate payment.
The Redmond Police Department warned the scam messages often specify a dollar amount and include a link to a phishing website designed to steal personal and financial information.
To help the public avoid falling victim to this scam, the RPD has issued several tips.
They advise people not to click on links in unexpected text messages regarding tolls. Instead, they recommend verifying the legitimacy of any toll claims by contacting the official state tolling agency directly through their official website or phone number.

The scam texts often include a specific dollar amount and a link to pay, which leads to a phishing website designed to steal personal and financial information. To avoid falling victim to this scam, Redmond Police offer the following tips: (1) Do not click on links in unexpected text messages about tolls. (2) Verify the legitimacy of any toll claims by contacting the official state tolling agency directly using their official website or phone number. (3) Report suspicious texts using your phone’s “report junk” option or forward them to 7226 (SPAM). (4) Delete the suspicious text messages after reporting them.
